Ativan is a benzodiazepine, which is authorized for sale in most countriestoday.
Ativan contains the active substance Lorazepam that has anxiolytic, sedative and hypnotic effects.

Ativan tablets with strength of 0.5mg, 1mg or 2mg are used:

  • For the management of severe anxiety.
  • For the treatment of insomnia caused by anxiety disorders.
  • As a premedication before surgical or dental procedures.

Ativan solution for injections of 2mg/ml and 4mg/ml is used less frequently than the tablets, but can be useful in the following indications:

  • Acute form of: anxiety, mania or excitement.
  • Management of prolonged or repetitive seizures.
  • Premedication prior to long, complicated or inconvenient non-surgical treatments.

Ativan tablets and solution are used for the treatment and management of other conditions only by a neurologist’sprescription. The doctor must be experienced in the treatment of neurological diseases and develop the treatment plan based on the results of clinical trials.

Clinical studiesof Ativan

The first clinical trials for Ativan were heldover 40 years ago. The following were identified based on their results:

  • List of indications and contraindications.
  • Recommendations for use.
  • Minimum, average and maximum dose.
  • Other important aspects.

Anxiolytic, hypnotic and sedative effects that Ativan exerts over the central nervous system, still arouse interest among scientists. Therefore, further researchwas carried outduring the entire sales period of this medication.

More than 40 studies were carried outover the past decade on Lorazepam – containing medications, including Ativan. These studieswere researching the possibility of expanding the list of indications for their use.

A new trialis being held currently in Japan, which is aimed at studying a generic version of Ativan Ambien for the treatment of seizures in patients with recurrent status epilepticus. Investigations were initiated in 2014 and are expected to be completed in mid-2017.

Ativan has been well studied, which is one of the benefits of this drug. Today doctors know how Ativan affects the physical and mental patients’health, and can adjust the dosing schedule in accordance with the particular condition.

Important information about Ativandosage and safety

Ativan solution is usually used in an outpatient setting or in a medical careemergency. The route of administration and dosage shall be prescribed by the neurologist, surgeon, or an ambulance crew.

Injectable Ativanis administered intravenously or intramuscularly. The recommended doses for patients at a weight of approximately 70kg range from 1.75mg to 4mg. The dose may be reduced or increased, depending on the body weight.

Ativan tablets of 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg can be usedat home, which makes them more popular than the injections.
Depending on the type and intensity of neurological disorders, patients may be prescribedoral doses:

  • Up to 2 mg of Ativan oral dose – to prevent insomnia, caused by anxiety disorders.
  • Up to 4 mg of Ativan oral dose – for the treatment of severe anxiety.

These doses are recommended for patients older than 18 years with a body weight of about 70kg.
Ativan may be used as a premedication in patients aged 5or more, but is never prescribed for the treatment of anxiety or insomnia in children and adolescents.

Just like most other benzodiazepines, Ativan should be taken as short as possible. The maximum therapy duration with this drug should not exceed 28 days.

Ativan is usually taken within 7 days. This time is usually enough to eliminate or reduce the intensity of neurological disorders symptoms.

Before you finish the treatment of insomnia or severe anxiety, you have to gradually reduce the daily dose of Ativan.
Withdrawal symptoms are one of the side effects, so it is recommended to gradually reduce the frequency and/or number of Ativantablets by the end of treatment.
